TCMG Member Bill Risser Passes

It is a sad duty to report the passing of TCMG member Bill Risser.  He and his good friend and neighbor Charlie Duvall have been members since 2007.  Bill owned his beautiful 1948 MG TC since 1972.

2016 Conclave Dates Announced

meetings

pebblebeach-adOur next monthly meeting is on February 23rd at the usual Montrose location.  The program is Movie Night, where members will be showing a one-hour presentation of early photos and stories from the Pebble Beach Road Races.  We will hear quips about the races from TCMG member Bob Koons, who races TCs and presently owns one of the cars that ran in the first race at Pebble Beach.  Listen to interviews from the men who were there, and see the likes of Al Moss, Carroll Shelby, Phil Hill and Stirling Moss racing through the trees. See TCs pushing the corners,  glimpses of the Flying Shingle plus many other fabulous race cars of the past in action.  A truly wonderful presentation you are sure to enjoy!

Thanks to Curt Sorensen for putting on this year’s Puzzle Night. It was a very challenging competition, with the 4-person team of Richard & Sandra Loe and Steve & Linda Simmons coming through victorious.

grab

Our next monthly meeting is November 24th. Our night will start with a brief video presentation by Jim Crandall, showing highlights from the 1992 Great Rally Around Britain in which several TCMG members transported their TCs to England for an extended driving tour. Following the video will be a “show and tell” by former GRABers of their favorite rally photos and other memorabilia. Stan Belland has agreed to lead with his recollections of “How GRAB was born,” followed by anecdotes from other participants ranging from planning and preparation to surviving breakdowns and British weather.

Any TCMG members who may be toying with the wild idea of another “extreme” TC tour should hear these tales of woe as well as the fond recollections. But all members should enjoy the variety of experiences shared by those who were brave enough (read crazy enough) to commit to months of planning and weeks of extended touring in an MGTC.

TCMG Loses a cherished member

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of an icon in the TC Motoring Guild, Tony Henkels. Besides being a talented machinist, he was a true gentleman and great friend to so many of us over the years that he was in the club. Tony was always ready to help his friends with their cars and offered expert advice at every chance. His wife Cindy writes the following:

It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you my beloved Tony passed away last night. Family and a few close friends were here with him. He was such a wonderful loving man and I am truly blessed to have been part of his life. We all will miss him so much!

It was very peaceful as we all said our goodbyes to him. I told him we had such a wonderful life together in sickness and in health until death do us part, and said it was okay for him to go, I didn’t want him to suffer anymore. A minute or two later he took his last breath.

He fought bladder cancer and scans showed he was good, no cancer anywhere, that was just 6 months ago. A lot of time the cancer will return and when it does it is with a vengeance, that is what happened. Just a couple weeks ago we found that it had returned and spread everywhere so we chose to have Hospice come.

When we make arrangements I will let you know. Hope everything is good and well in your lives, enjoy every minute! Love & Hugs, Cindy

Great Turnout at Henkels Service!

The service for TCMG member Tony Henkles brought out 25 club members and five TCs, one of them Tony’s old TC looking as good as ever. Lots of other classics made showings as well, including Tony’s two very original cars, a 1928 Lincoln and a Jaguar XK-120.

Conclave is coming!

Less than one week until the 59th Annual TCMG / ARR Conclave on October 9-11 in Cambria! Check the Calendar Page for details. Don’t miss this annual tradition!

Love & Hugs, Cindy

meetings

GRABOur next monthly meeting on November 24 will start with a brief video presentation by Jim Crandall, showing highlights from the 1992 Great Rally Around Britain in which several TCMG members transported their TCs to England for an extended driving tour.

But all members should enjoy the variety of experiences shared by those who were brave enough (read crazy enough) to commit to months of planning and weeks of extended touring in an MGTC.

meetings

route66videoNote location change!  Our annual movie night on September 22 has moved back to our regular Montrose location this year.  The presentation will be part one of a two-part program on Route 66, a road that has captured the imagination of generations, both home and abroad.  In this video, you will travel the “Mother Road” with noted author and highway historian Michael Wallis as he revisits the tourist spots and quaint motels, secret corners and little towns made famous by his popular book.

Thanks to David Reid and Terry Schuller for a fascinating look at the technology and methods of underwater photography!

events

Fremont-flagOur next event on September 12 takes us to the Gene Autry Museum for a special exhibit on the Civil War in the Western states.  “Empire and Liberty” is the first major museum exhibition to examine the American Civil War from the vantage point of Westward expansion.  Explore an array of more than 200 artifacts, including Texas slave sale documents, Andrés Pico’s war drum, the battle flag carried by soldiers of the California Hundred, a Buffalo Soldier’s revolver, and Cherokee General Stand Watie’s bowie knife. This exhibition shows how the Civil War was more than a clash between the North and South; it was part of a history of how America would expand.

After the exhibit we will enjoy lunch (of course!), and afterward for those interested there will be a showing of a Civil War movie starring Errol Flynn.  The film is free with your museum admission.  Look for a flyer in the mail with details on meeting time and location, etc.

August event recap: Five TCs and 18 members and guests took part in our tour of the Adolfo Camarillo House in August. TCs were driven by Loe, Buckeridge, Simmons, Einhorn and Crandall.

The 59th Annual TCMG / ARR Conclave will be held this October in Cambria. Watch the Calendar Page for more details.

For those going for the Sargent Trophy, note that we have two official events this month – the much anticipated Mount Wilson Tour on June 6 and GoF West June 15-19 in Rohnert Park.

Check out our Regalia Page for new regalia items! We have just added two jigsaw puzzles to our regalia offerings. These are the same puzzles featured in our annual Puzzle Night competitions! They feature the lineups from our 2013 and 2014 TCMG / ARR Conclaves. Quantities are limited, so buy yours before they are all gone!

meetings

Our next monthly meeting is the always enjoyable Henkels Picnic!  Join us on June 23 at the Henkels home and bring a picnic dinner.  Desserts are provided by our hosts.  For those returning from GoF West, bring your awards or other items of interest to share.  There will be lots of tire kicking and gawking at Tony’s many “big boy toys”, along with the usual good company.  Don’t miss out, be there!

Many thanks to our guest speaker at the May meeting, Mike Simmons, who gave an excellent talk about the location of our June tour, Mount Wilson Observatory.

events

Our next event takes us to Rohnert Park for GoF West 2015.  If you have not yet registered, act now!  Contact Pete Thelander for caravan information to and from the event.

SAVE BOTH DATES! Our meeting on May 26 and our event one week later on June 6 are linked as two parts of a special presentation on the history of the mount Wilson Observatory. If you plan to attend one then plan to attend both! You’ll be glad you did. See below for details.

Special thanks to David Spiegel for hosting the April meeting at his home, and for showing us the remarkable restoration of his MG SA Saloon!

meetings

mt-wilson-truckAt our next monthly meeting on May 26, our special guest is Mike Simmons, president of Astronomers Without Borders and founder of the Mount Wilson Observatory Association. Mike has given talks to numerous scientific organizations around the world, and this May will be giving our club a presentation on the rich history of the Mount Wilson Observatory which spans well over a century. His talk will include a slideshow of historic images, showing turn of the century vehicles and machines, how an observatory came to a 5700-foot mountaintop in 1904, and the many famous faces like Einstein and Hubble who made important scientific discoveries while working at Mount Wilson.

This is a fascinating presentation and is an excellent primer for our June 6th tour to the observatory itself. Whether or not you will attend the tour, you won’t want to miss this program!
